World’s Top 10 Head to Wuhan for Asian Swing Showcase

Time:2018-08-15Release:WUHAN OPEN

All ten players in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings have entered this year’s Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, including reigning Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon champions Caroline Wozniacki, Simone Halep and Angelique Kerber.

In total 19 of the World’s Top 20 and 45 of the World’s Top 50 players will compete at the prestigious WTA Premier event in central China, which celebrates its fifth birthday this year.

Since joining the WTA Tour in 2014, Wuhan has established itself at the heart of tennis’s ‘Asian Swing’ and 2018 could prove to be the tournament’s strongest year yet. Wozniacki, Halep and Kerber will be joined by two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza, two-time Wimbledon and two-time Wuhan Open champion Petra Kvitova and the reigning Wuhan Open champion Caroline Garcia as well as Australian Ashleigh Barty, whom Garcia beat in last year’s compelling singles final.

Wuhan Open Co-Tournament Director Fabrice Chouquet said:

“We’re very proud to provide such an important showcase for the world’s very best players and we believe that the calibre of players we attract is testament to how much the tournament has grown and flourished in the last five years. Chinese fans are falling in love with tennis thanks to events like ours and the incredible players who come to compete in Wuhan.”

A full list of players competing in Wuhan this year is below. In addition the tournament has five wildcards at its discretion (including two for Top 20 players or other players of outstanding achievement* ). Eight players will also be included from the qualifying competition.

New for Wuhan Open 2018:

This year’s tournament will employ groundbreaking FOXTENN Real Bounce officiating technology. This will mark the first time this technology has been used at a WTA Premier 5-level event. FOXTENN's new In/Out calculation system captures images of the ball at the moment of impact using synchronised cameras and laser scanners located on the surface of the court. The ultra-high speed system analyzes up to 2500 images per second. The technology was approved for use on the WTA Tour from January 2018.
