Wuhan Open ambassador Li Na inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Double Grand Slam champion Li Na has become the first Asian-born tennis player inducted into the prestigious International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday 20 July.

The Roland Garros (2011) and Australian Open (2014) Champion joined fellow inductees Mary Pierce and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in an on-court ceremony at the home of the Hall of Fame in Newport, California.

The Chinese superstar was famously born and raised in Wuhan and now acts as an ambassador for the tournament in her hometown, the Wuhan Open, a WTA Premier 5 event which takes place from 22-28 September 2019.

Wuhan Open Tournament Directors Mr. Zhu and Ms. Li passed on their joint congratulations to Li Na in a meeting before her departure for the USA.  They said: “Li Na is the pride of Wuhan.  With outstanding persistence and effort she created history and has made a very special contribution to Chinese tennis. As fellow Wuhanese we send her the sincerest congratulations and look forward to meeting her again as a Wuhan Open family member at the Optics Valley Tennis Centre this September.”

Brenda Perry, Wuhan Open Tournament Co-Director revealed that the Wuhan Open is considering a celebration event for Li Na’s induction to the International Tennis Hall of Fame during this year’s Wuhan Open, details will be released soon.  She commented on the impact that Li Na has made and continues to make in China:  “Li Na has not only accomplished extraordinary achievements during her playing career, but has continued to promote Chinese tennis around the world, and inspires more and more people to pick up a racket and step onto the tennis court. She is a very deserving recipient of induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and we send her our warmest congratulations.”

Li Na will return to the Wuhan Open in her role as Ambassador during the tournament which takes place from 22-28 September 2019.
