Two Former US Open Champs Play on Day 1

Time:2018-09-22Release:WUHAN OPEN

After a day of upsets yesterday, all the remaining seeds played to form in the second and final day of qualifying to go through to the main draw. Two of three Chinese players also won, meaning there will be five home country players in the fifth edition of the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open.

Seeded winners on the day included No. 2 Katerina Siniakova who needed less than an hour to defeat fellow Czech Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-1, and No. 3 Monica Puig who defeated Polona Hercog also in straights. In the longest match of the day, American Sofia Kenin notched a win over Romania’s Monica Niculescu 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and eighteen minutes.

Wild card and 2018 US Open Junior champion Xiyu Wang moved into the main draw when her opponent, Vania King, retired after having lost the first set 1-6. She’s joined by compatriot Yafan Wang who needed two tie-break sets and over two hours to defeat Australian Lizette Cabrera. Yingying Duan was not as fortunate, falling to No. 5 seed Rebecca Peterson in three sets.

On Sunday, play will open on Centre Court with Chinese wild card Saisai Zheng taking on American Danielle Collins. In the last match of the day session on Centre, No. 13 Daria Kasatkina goes up against Ukranian Lesia Tsurenko. Despite being the lower-ranked player at world No. 26, Tsurenko is enjoying a better hard court season, having made back-to-back quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open and the US Open.

After a 5-year Anniversary Opening Ceremony, the night session will feature two past US Open champions. 2011 champ Samantha Stosur takes on Tianjin native Shuai Zhang. Zhang will have reason to be confident, having won their last two meetings comfortably. That will be followed by 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens going up against Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit. Stephens crushed Kontaveit 6-2, 6-0 when they last played at the French Open this year, however Kontaveit has had impressive wins this year over Angelique Kerber, Venus Williams (twice), Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
