Preview: Qiang Wang vs. Maria Sakkari

Time:2018-09-24Release:WUHAN OPEN

The first night match on Centre Court will be between two women with something to prove as China’s Qiang Wang takes on Greece’s Maria Sakkari.

Wuhan fans got a good look at Sakkari last year as the Greek engineered a fairy tale run to the semifinals, coming all the way through qualifying and taking out then world No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki along the way. Currently at a new career high of No. 29 in the world, Sakkari will be out to prove that last year’s run was no fluke. This year, the 23-year-old has already reached her first final (on the hard courts of San Jose, California) and has notched wins over Naomi Osaka, Karolina Pliskova and Venus Williams. She’s also coming into the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open in good form, having made the semifinals in Seoul last week, losing to eventual champion Kiki Bertens.

The woman facing her across the net is also on an Asian Swing streak. The 26-year-old from Tianjin comes in even hotter, with a semifinal appearance two weeks ago at the Japan Open, losing to eventual champion Su-Wei Hsieh. More impressively, Wang won the title last week in Guangzhou without dropping a set. In fact, she gave up just 15 games in 5 matches on her way to her second title of the year, adding to her win at the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang. Wang is now the new Chinese No. 1 and at a career high of No. 34. Wang brings with her an unbeaten 2-0 head-to-head record against Sakkari, having last won on clay in a three-set match last year.

In other action, 2015 Wuhan Open runner-up Garbine Muguruza goes up against world No. 51 Alison Van Uytvanck in the first match of the day on Centre Court. While the rankings suggest it should be an easy win for world No. 14 and two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza, the Spaniard has struggled since a French Open semifinal appearance to string together two consecutive wins. Also, the last time they played, the Belgian scored a shock three-set victory in the second round of Wimbledon.

Last week’s winner in Seoul, Kiki Bertens, is also in action, taking on comeback kid Belinda Bencic. Bertens is enjoying a new career high of world No. 11 while 21-year-old and former world No. 7 Bencic is trying to regain her form after a long string of injuries dating back to 2016.
