Time:2018-09-25Release:WUHAN OPEN

The highest seed in action on Monday at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko, fell to Australian Daria Gavrilova in straight sets. The 24-year-old Australian broke Ostapenko’s serve right off the bat, signaling a difficult service day lay ahead for the 2017 French Open champion. Ostapenko’s shaky serve was under pressure the entire match, leading to 15 break points, and serving up only 2 aces to 8 double faults, including one to give away the first set. Ostapenko briefly recovered to surge to a 3-0 lead in the second, but Gavrilova managed to even things at 4-4 on the way to a 6-2, 6-4 win. She next faces Barbora Strycova who defeated France’s Alize Cornet, 6-3, 6-2.

Other seeds safely moved through on Day 2, including No. 14 Garbine Muguruza who decisively defeated Alison Van Uytvanck, 6-4, 6-0 to ensure there would be no repeat of their last match at this year’s Wimbledon when the Belgian upended Muguruza in a second-round match. “I’m happy that I won this time. I remember the match from Wimbledon, like a very tough match for me,” said the 2015 Wuhan Open finalist. “It’s always good to play again the same person that beat you, feeling good you did something much better than the previous match.” Last year’s finalist, No. 16 Ashleigh Barty also moved through safely, raining down 10 aces on her way to defeating Britain’s Johanna Konta, 7-5, 6-4. In the final match of the day, No. 12 Kiki Bertens needed nearly two and a half hours to defeat Belinda Bencic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in a match which concluded just a few minutes before midnight. She next plays Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Round 2.

In other results, three of four Chinese players won on the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, including Chinese No. 1 Qiang Wang who overcame a slow start to defeat last year’s Wuhan Open semifinalist Maria Sakkari, 7-5, 6-2. Also, 17-year-old qualifier Xiyu Wang continued her excellent run, taking out American Bernarda Pera, 6-4, 6-3. The first player moving onto the third round was Chinese No. 2, Shuai Zhang, defeating lucky loser Polona Hercog, 6-2, 7-5.

Other winners on Day 2 included Madison Keys, Donna Vekic, and Dominika Cibulkova.
