Preview: Wang vs. Gavrilova

Time:2018-09-26Release:WUHAN OPEN

All eyes will be on the third match on Centre Court on Wednesday as home country heroine Qiang Wang takes on Australian Daria Gavrilova in a third-round match. In what has been a breakthrough year for the 26-year-old from Tianjin, Wang has won 12 of her last 14 matches, dating back to the third round of the US Open. She’s already equaled her Round of 16 appearance from last year, but the question for the new Chinese No. 1 is how far can she go? Only one ranking spot separates her from the woman standing across the net, 24-year-old Daria Gavrilova who ousted No. 10 seed Jelena Ostapenko on Monday. The two last played at Wimbledon in 2016 where Gavrilova came off the victor, but a lot has happened in the last two years and if Wang has enough gas left in the tank, it should be another close contest.

World No. 46 Shuai Zhang will have extra motivation to at least outpace her countrywoman to reclaim her mantle as the top-ranked Chinese player as she goes up against Anett Kontaveit in the third match on Court 1. Zhang played well in Hiroshima two weeks ago, making the semifinals, but her doubles results have been more impressive of late, winning in Hiroshima and making the semis in both the women’s and mixed doubles at the US Open. She’ll need to lift her game against the No. 27 Estonian who took out Sloane Stephens in the first round.

In other action, world No. 3 Angelique Kerber takes last year’s finalist and No. 16 seed Ashleigh Barty. The two play a similar game style with excellent defense, so it’ll come down to whoever can punch a hole through their opponent’s game first. The two have played three times, all on hard courts, with Kerber holding a 2-1 lead. In their only meeting this year, Kerber won 6-4, 6-4, so expect another even encounter.

No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova continues her quest for a third Wuhan Open crown as she takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Six of their ten encounters have gone to three sets, but the two haven’t faced each other since 2015. Pavlyuchenkova has played well to get to this stage, however, taking out Belinda Bencic and No. 12 Kiki Bertens.

In the first night match on Centre Court, No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki takes on 2016 Olympic Gold medalist Monica Puig. Puig came through qualifying so has had a lot of match play this week while Wozniacki has had one match win and lost first-round in Tokyo last week. When Puig is on, she has laser groundstrokes off both wings and could be the type of player to overpower Wozniacki if the Dane isn’t on her game.
